Durkan: Dissidents Will Not Deter Our City

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has criticised those responsible for a security alert in Derry following the discovery of two explosive devices near Derry City Council.

A pipe bomb was left in a holdall at Derry City Council's office grounds and a booby trap attached to a bicycle chained to railings on a walkway at the back of the offices. Volunteers from Foyle Search and Rescue discovered these devices. Mr Durkan said:

The volunteers from Foyle Search and Rescue are there to save lives not risk their own lives. One of these volunteers was placed in serious danger when she lifted the holdall and looked inside to discover an explosive device, this is utterly unacceptable.

These explosive devices put members of the public at real risk. Thankfully no-one was injured, but we have residents and workers at Derry City Council disrupted while they try to go about their business. Council workers serve all the people of Derry and this is an attack on both workers and the public.

While the people of Derry look forward to culture night this evening and a weekend of celebration these people seek to do harm. The reckless and dangerous actions of this minority will not deter the City from enjoying this important weekend.
