Durkan Welcomes Translink Investment At Drumahoe

SDLP Social Development spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has welcomed the announcement by the Department for Regional Development to extend the Drumahoe park and ride facility on the Glenshane Road near Derry.

Mr Durkan was speaking following confirmation that planning permission has been granted for the scheme which is due to commence on site in mid-October and to be completed by January 2013:

"I welcome this move by the Department as the Drumahoe park and ride service has proved extremely popular with commuters. Any initiative which encourages more people to use public transport has a positive impact on the environment. Given the current price of fuel using such a service is an economical way for people to get to and from work.

We have recently seen investment in this route with Wi-Fi installed on the maiden city flyer. This is an encouraging provision for internet users. The 212 Derry to Belfast service is responsible for transporting thousands of students and workers and has been a great success.

However I would also like to see resources allocated to services within Derry itself where routes have been reduced in recent years. This has adversely affected areas such as Creggan and Hazelbank.

Indeed there are other areas of the city such as Coshquin and Culmore which are still not serviced by Ulsterbus. I urge the Department to look at transport facilities in these areas as soon as possible.
